The ECHO and THRIVE trials had a relatively diverse patient population and the trials were successful from the perspective that a relatively high proportion of female patients were enrolled. Limitations of this study include the fact that there were small numbers of participants in some of the subgroups. As male and White patients were overrepresented, this prevented a more in depth assessment of the possible effects of gender and race on RPV efficacy and safety. A large observational cohort study including more women and patients from different ethnicities would be feasible, given that these subgroups account for a substantial proportion of HIV 1 infected patients world wide, and despite the limitations inherent in observational studies, useful information on potential subgroup differences could be provided.
