Bacillus cereus is a Gram-positive, endospore-forming bacterium that frequently causes emetic and diarrhoeal types of food-borne illnesses. The growth domains of strains of B. cereus sensu lato range from nearly thermophilic to psychrotrophic, selleck kinase inhibitor and correlate with several phylogenetic clusters (Guinebretiere et al., 2008). Bacillus cereus adapts membrane fluidity during low-temperature growth by increasing the proportion of branched-chain fatty acids and decreasing their equivalent chain length, and increasing the anteiso-/iso-branched ratio and the proportion of unsaturated fatty acids (Haque & Russell, 2004). Other mechanisms are likely involved as described for other bacteria. No functional evidence for the role of a gene in the cold adaptation of B. cereus has been obtained so far.
